Definition of XLR Connector 

XLR connectors are a type of electrical connection used in professional audio and video applications. It is also used in medical technology. These connectors are cylindrical, with three to seven connector pins, and are often used for analog balanced audio interconnects, AES3 digital audio, portable intercoms, DMX512 lighting control, and low-voltage power supplies.



History of XLR Connector

The XLR connector was invented by James H. Cannon. He was the founder of Canon Electric Company. This company is based in Los Angeles California. Hence XLR connector is also called canon plug or canon connector. In 1950 the XLR connector originated from the canon X series connector.  It added a latching mechanism that made the canon xl model connector in 1955.  It was the XLP series of connectors with hard plastic insulation and the XLR model name is commonly used for all variants.

Design of XLR Connector

XLR connectors are available in male, female, cable and chassis mounting designs with four styles in total.

Different Types of XLR Connectors

XLR Connectors are 6 types
  1. Three-Pin(XLR3)
  2. Four-Pin(XLR4)

Three Pin (XLR3)

Three-pin XLR connectors are the most common and ideal for receiving balanced audio.

Use- These three pin XLR connectors are used to interconnect powered speakers with line level signals using the PA system application.  It exists in rechargeable devices that use three-pin XLR connectors.  Electric powered mobility wheelchairs and scooters are also used. This connector can carry 2 to 10 amps at 24 volts.


Four Pin (XLR4) 

Use- The four-pin (XLR4) connector is ideal for intercom headsets.  It has 4 pins out of which two pins are used for mono headphone signal and other 2 pins are used for unbalanced microphone signal.  It is also used for professional film, basic camera and DC power connections.

Five-Pin (XLR5)

Use - Five-pin connector ideal for digital lighting control. Also common uses for Five-Pin are for dual-element or stereo microphones and stereo intercom headset headphones. The five-pin connector contains 5 pins - three pins for boom, right and ground and two pins for unbalanced microphone signals. Additionally these five three XLR connectors are used for DC power to audio equequipment.



Six-Pin (XLR6)

Use - The 6 pin XLR connector is used for dual channel intercom systems, stage lighting control applications. Also used in professional stereo headsets, balanced microphones.

Seven-Pin (XLR7)

Use - Seven-pin XLR connectors are used to connect bulb condenser microphones to their power supplies (eg signal polarization voltage, heater and HT carrier). The seven-pin XLR connector is controlled by a non-conventional analog light signal Also for wired intercoms in broadcast studios, especially with word back intercoms.

PDN 

Use - This connection has blue or white insulation on the loudspeaker canon (known as the PDN connector) and the PDN connection is used for the connection between the audio power amplifier and the loudspeakers.
